The climbing region Filzmoos

Not far from the Hofpürglhütte you will find a climbing garden with 300 climbing routes at difficulty levels I – X with different rope lengths and expositions.

The Hofpürglhütte is an ÖAV refuge and stands on the Gosaukamm, below the Bischofsmütze in the eastern part of the Dachstein Mountains. It is a comfortable base for Alpine activities and for sport climbing. Directly behind the Hofpürglhütte is the oldest climbing garden in this area.

The climbing area around the Hofpürglhütte has grown into the largest contiguous climbing area in the state of Salzburg. More than 300 sport climbing routes can be reached in just a few minutes from the hut. All routes are very well equipped with hooks and are clearly written at the start. Since the rocks are aligned in all directions, you will find a suitable rock for climbing in all weathers.

Heinz Sudra, the hut owner, has created a small climbing paradise here. He tirelessly drills one line at a time and makes sure that they are perfectly secured.

The rock is mostly compact, high mountain limestone. However, there are also some athletic sports climbs on small roofs, cracks and edges. The difficulties are widely spread in almost all sectors, so that in a confined space you will find not only lighter but also difficult routes.

  • Rauchwand
The climbing garden Rauchwand with 31 routes, offers varied climbing (chimneys, cracks, plates, overhangs etc.) with an Alpine touch. The routes consist partly of several lengths and are equipped with hooks. Clamping wedges are not required.

  • Mosermandl
Vertical to heavily overhanging wall climbing on very rough rock. In the Eskimo sector, some snow is still in place until the end of July.

  • Oberhofalm
All routes are very well equipped with hooks. These are short but interesting climbing sites. Ideal also for beginners.

  • Goldbründl
All routes are south-facing and very well equipped with hooks and up to 35 m high.

  • S'Zapferl
All routes are very well equipped with hooks. Everything is available from walls, plates, cracks and chimneys to overhanging climbing.

Our climbing tips: Via Ferrata

There are currently 4 Via Ferrata in Filzmoos. The climbing trails at the Lechnerturm and Steiglkogel are reached from the Hofpürglhütte. From the Bachlalm or Dachstein valley station, the trails lead to the Johann-Klettersteig and the new Anna-Klettersteig. Although these are located in the neighbouring Ramsau, they are very easy to reach from Filzmoos.

  • Albert Weiss Climb
The short but crisp Via Ferrata at the Lechnerturm was set up by the Bischofshofen mountain rescue team and the mountaineers of the Krobatin Barracks as a practice climbing trail.

  • Steiglkogel
Classic easy Via Ferrata. Well secured with wire ropes, a summit ascent to one of the most beautiful viewpoints. From the summit you can enjoy a beautiful panorama of the Bischofsmütze, Gosau Glacier and Lake Gosausee.

Access: From the Hofpürglhütte to the Steiglpass (45 minutes), from there via Steiglweg right in an easterly direction, on a clearly visible path to the small saddle between the Eisgrubenturm and Steiglkogel to the entrance.

  • Anna Klettersteig
The Anna-Klettersteig was built as a way of accessing the Johann-Klettersteig (Archduke Johann married the bourgeois Anna Plochl in 1829). This Via Ferrata leads to the Mitterstein and can also be used as a tour on its own.

  • Johann Klettersteig
"Der Johann", as this Via Ferrata through the south wall of the Dachsteinwarte is respectfully called, is by far the most demanding on the southern side of the Dachstein area. The climbing route is approx. 800 m at 600 m wall height! Alpine experience is absolutely necessary to attempt this route. In early summer, crampons are advantageous. The climb itself is excellently secured by a continuous steel cable with a diameter of 30 mm. Only recommended in fair weather and with Alpine experience!

The climbing region Ramsau am Dachstein

The Dachstein Glacier is perched at 3,000 metres. The Dachstein has always been fascinating for all mountaineers and climbers. In Ramsau am Dachstein you will also find the first Via Ferrata in the Alps. Here you will find a true paradise, for both children and adults:

  • 22 Via Ferrata and tours
  • 1 children's climbing trail
  • 3 youth’s climbing trails
  • Kali's Via Ferrata garden
  • Beginner courses with Via Ferrata certificate

High rope climbing garden in Flachauwinkl with Flying Fox

In Flachauwinkl, approx. 30 minutes drive away, there is a high rope climbing garden built on wooden piles. Trained guides ensure the correct securing and support when climbing over obstacles, ropes and wooden elements. This climbing garden is suitable for courageous climbers from 8 years old. The absolute highlight is the 150 metre long Flying Fox directly over the lake. And finally, a dip in the refreshingly cool water.
